WIRDA 's MDG(3a): Contributing to Reduced Child Mortality
Situational Analysis
Wakiso District has a 69% immunization rate for children two years of age. Although this may seem like a strong majority of the children, it is far below acceptable standards. This not only puts the children of the community at risk for serious illness and disease, but it also increases the risk of possible epidemics within the surrounding communities. With the access to healthcare care characterized by a high cost of travel to the subsidized Health Centers in the improvised rural communities, an epidemic would be difficult to treat and control. The high cost of treating illnesses and disease could easily become overwhelming. The lack of proper immunizations now could lead to bigger issues and problems in the future.
The mission of this WIRDA is to improve the health and well being of children in Waksio district through education and improved community programs. Some universal approaches include enhancing education and publicity provided by the community and district health workers, a reward system to recruit volunteers, distributing pamphlets and fliers to the public, and providing several immunization options to the general public, providing education regarding the importance of immunizations to parents and guardians. Those at higher risk are the children of low-income families, therefore targeted approaches would include free immunizations, providing transportation to clinics for immunizations, and providing one-on-one education for those families regarding the benefits of immunizations.
By the end of 2012/13,WIRDA will
