WIRDA 's MDG 5: Contributing to the Sustainable use of the Environment

Situational Analysis

Deforestation to give way for farming, construction, and fuel wood has not spared the rich and diverse tropical forests of Wakiso District.  Further more, pollutant wastage disposal and poor farming methods are also doing great damage to the environment.  Whereas all poverty stricken rural households (100%) rely on fuel wood for cooking, all poor urban households depend on charcoal. More than two thirds (69%) of households in Wakiso District use kerosene lamps to light at night (Housing and Population Census, 2002). The rest (31%) on the grid are highly indebted to high tariff rates and legally regularized load shedding. Even if the tariff rates and load shedding are subsidized to zero level, the full grid cost connections, at about US$ 800, is four times the average annual income of an average Ugandan.

By the end of 2009/10 , WIRDA will

  2. Promoted the planting of a minimum of two (2) trees in each household in 1000 households per Sub County in 16 sub counties of Wakiso district.

  4. Promoted sustainable integrated farming methods as a tool for environment conservation and profit maximization among 1000 households per Sub County in 16 sub counties of Wakiso district.
