WIRDA 's MDG 4(c): Contributing to Malaria prevention and control at community level
Situational Analysis
As demonstrated in the above photography, Malaria in the Ugandan tropical rural Wakiso district is the number one cause of morbidity and mortality (MOH 2005) with catastrophic socioeconomic consequences in terms of the exorbitant treatment costs (related to travel, waiting ,consultancy, & drugs) and absenteeism from work or school. In this rural society, while an average family size is 6 members, with the majority (75%) thriving on one US dollar or less per day, Insecticide Treated Nets( ITN) use coverage per household head is only 11% (WIRDA 2006). It is fairly clear that the opportunity cost of a-one-time-ITN commercial purchase for 6 household members, means foregoing a cost of 30 days household meals. MOH currently provides ITNs to only pregnant mothers. Since the home is “the first hospital” in the majority of malaria cases, at community level our plan is to improve family and community practices such as early detection and rapid treatment of severe malaria and use of personnel and community prevention strategies like bed nets.
By the end of 2009/10 , WIRDA will
