WIRDA 's MDG 4(b): Contributing to the Mitigation of the impact of HIV/AIDS
Situational Analysis
The number of orphans and vulnerable children has increased in five years, and is common to find families under the responsibility of grandparents in the district. The target population of the Strategic plan will be the Orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). The beneficiaries of the this plan will be the OVC and care takers and those who have a potential for actively supporting OVC initiatives. The Strategic plan goal is to assist those orphans and other vulnerable children realize their full potential through strengthening the capacity of their support institutions and structures to be able to respond effectively to the socioeconomic impact of HIV/AIDS.
By the end of 2012/2013, WIRDA will

Have mobilized resources and thereafter strengthened the capacity of 300 community institutions and structures to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on orphans and other vulnerable children and affected families in the 16 sub counties of Wakiso District.

Have reached 50,000 OVC and OVC families with to essential services and programs specifically for education, psychosocial, health and livelihoods training in the 16 sub counties of Wakiso District

Have created one OVC center in each sub county in the 16 sub counties of Wakiso district that are supportive of the care and protection needs of children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.
Planned Activities under specific goal #1 include
Creation of Community Orphan´ Committee (COCs),
Mobilization of community and FBO networks for HIV/AIDS activities.
Sensitize local leaders, FBO, and CBO leaders to enable them
understand the needs of orphans and objective of the orphan project,
Need assessment in the locality
Train Community Orphans’ Committees on selection procedures of orphans and
guardians including IGA management and follow up and train in HIV/ Prevention
and Care
Select orphans to be assisted
Determine the IGA to be developed
Select the youth centers activities and work providers
Follow up guardians with running IGAs
Revise and Develop the curricula for train
Planned Activities under specific goal #2 include
To Meet guardians, parent teacher associations, school management committees and COCs.
To Offer vocational training to orphans who failed to join secondary school after primary school.
To Provide medical assistance to orphans to be supported.
To Offer scholarships to secondary school orphans.
To promote the Creation of youth club for vocational activities and life skill training.
To Provide materials to develop the vocational training in Youth Vocational Centers.
To Train community workers in Sexual and Reproductive Health
Planned Activities under specific goal #3 include
Creation of youth centers/ club for life skill training
Provide youth centers with essential material and equipment.
Select and train the youth center worker.
Assess and select COCs, orphans and guardians to receive IGAs and Micro Credit.
Train in HIV/ AIDS prevention and care
Conduct training in Micro Credit enterprise.
Offer Micro Credit to trained people.
Provide IGAs to trained guardians
Follow up the IGA and the Youth centers activities.
