WIRDA 's MDG#2: Contributing   to Universal Primary Education (UPE) dropout prevention

Situational Analysis

Results from the WIRDA (2006) monitoring and evaluation of UPE progress indicate that Orphans and Vulnerable children(OVC) in UPE are at risk of dropping out of school, following the end in 2006 of the World Bank Community HIV/AIDs Initiative (CHAI)which that provided bulky OVC support. The problems OVC face range from scholarlastic materials, and other UPE home costs such as uniforms and shoes, leading to absenteeism and poor performance. Worse still,no efforts were made sustain the project beyond World Bank funding. With apparently no similar project in the pipeline to the replace the CHAI project, some of the OVC may never complete UPE,unless an intervention is designed for them. Community based oriented actions and safety nets are therefore urgently needed in order not comprise the OVC schooling.

By the end of 2012/2013 , WIRDA will

  • Have mobilized resources for empowering 1000 UPE pupil households with income generating activities (IGAs) to address UPE home based costs of 100, 000 UPE vulnerable pupils in order to avert UPE school dropout.
