WIRDA MDG goal # 1(b): Improving vulnerable youth access to entrepreneurship and resources in order to halve Poverty
Situational Analysis
In rural Wakiso districts, 30 % of out of school youth aged 18-24 are orphans. They have no way to support themselves. High school fees are prohibitive; there are no jobs and many become caregivers at a very early age and must look after family members living with AIDS. Out of school youth with nothing to do are understandably getting into trouble and suffering from a profound sense of hopelessness–no parents, no supervision, no hope, pregnancy, and nowhere to go.
They have little to build an adult life on in the context of their grief, struggle, hunger and fear. While many abandon the sick and elderly in search of work in the urban areas, they become lost as they are unequipped to find work or deal with the urban environment. Throughout Wakiso district there is not one single non-profit youth center, library or place for youth to go.
By the end of 2012/2013 , WIRDA will
Have mobilized resources for providing skills training to150,000 out of school youth in different arts & crafts, e.g., painting, carpentry, bamboo work, pottery, tailoring, etc.
Have promoted 50,000 trained youth to start own enterprises based on rural resources and skills, and at same time promoted HIV prevention through youth ARTs and Craft HIV messages targeted to reach 50,000 peers in each sub county in 16 Wakiso district sub counties
